Kumarakom Travel Information

Kumarakom, the placid epicentre of Kerala backwaters, is situated 16 kms away from Kottyam. It's a group of small islands on the Eastern bank of Vembanad Lake. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary
White Necked Stork Ciconia Episcopus, Kumarakom Bird SanctuaryThe sanctuary is situated on the banks of the splendid lake of Vembanad on a vast expanse of 14 acres. This beautiful sanctuary is home to many migratory birds. Popular among them are Siberian stork, egret, darter heron etc. Some of the other common varieties are water fowl, cuckoo, parrots, wood pecker. While visitors can cruise along the outskirts of the sanctuary on a boat and spot some rare species of birds.

Aruvikkuzhi Waterfalls
This spot of boundless charms receives visitors looking for sheer enjoyment. Water falling down the mountain fiercely with a majestic roar from a height of 100 ft. grab the attention of the tourists.

Vembanad Lake
The lake, at about 16km from Kottayam, is the repository to myriad rivers, rivulets and canals of Kottayam. The lake stretches from Alappuzha to Kochi and covers an area of 79 sq miles. This enchanting tourist spot is fast turning out to be known also as a backwater destination. A small island, Pathiramanal adds beauty to this lake which can be reached by boat.
